More details have been released about the moments leading up to an armed robbery in St. Paul that left the 16-year-old suspect dead.

Four teens have been charged in connection to the incident: 16-year-old Donte Edward Foster of Woodbury, 17-year-old Malcolm James Devion Golden of St. Paul, 16-year-old Kendell Anthony Lewis of St. Paul and 16-year-old Nautica Delshaun Cox of St. Paul.

The alleged crimes started at 4:40 a.m. Friday, July 31, after a man reported that his silver sedan had been stolen from an alley behind his house. Two loaded guns were inside the vehicle, the victim reported.

Ten minutes later, police were called to the Cub Foods on Clarence Street in St. Paul on a report that a man had been robbed at gunpoint at a nearby bus stop. He said a teen wearing a red and black long-sleeved shirt, tan pants and face mask ordered him to empty his pockets. The teen then left in a silver sedan.

At 10:26 p.m. that same day, police were called to Monument Park on Summit Avenue on a report of a shooting.

A man told police that he came to the bluffs to watch the blue moon, and he struck up a conversation with a woman sitting nearby. As they were chatting, a boy – later identified as Golden – approached them and asked to use his cellphone to call his mom. As the victim was standing up, another teen wearing a black mask pointed a semi-automatic handgun at him and ordered him to empty his pockets.

The victim had a valid permit to carry and also took out his gun, shooting the suspect several times.

The suspect was identified as 16-year-old Lavauntai Broadbent of West St. Paul, who died at the scene despite the man’s efforts to administer first aid. The woman who was sitting with the victim called 911 as the victim took off his shirt and tried to save Broadbent.

Officers spoke with Broadbent’s mother, who said Golden told her that Broadbent had been shot. Golden was then arrested.

On Saturday, Aug. 1, police found the stolen silver sedan, which was being driven by Lewis. They say they also found stolen property from the Cub Foods robbery in the vehicle.

Police then interviewed Foster, who admitted to stealing the silver sedan and being with Broadbent when Broadbent robbed the man at the bus stop. He said they switched the license plate of the silver sedan after they stole it, according to the complaint.

In an interview with police, Cox also said he was with Broadbent during the robbery at the bus stop.

Foster said he was with Broadbent, Golden and Lewis during the robbery that Friday night. He said Lewis handed Broadbent the gun and that he heard multiple gunshots. Golden ran away, and Lewis and Foster got in the silver sedan and drove away, according to the complaint.

Investigators say Broadbent’s social media posts indicate he was a member of the Shoota Boy Gang.

Foster has been charged with two counts of aggravated robbery, vehicle theft and reckless discharge of a firearm. Golden has been charged with two counts of aggravated robbery and one count of vehicle theft. Lewis has been charged with two counts of aggravated robbery, vehicle theft and reckless discharge of a firearm. Cox has been charged with aggravated robbery and vehicle theft.

Other local media outlets have painted him as a gang banger wannabe and a bad ass in general.

It’s Minnesota. Expect the victim to be prosecuted.

“Nautica Delshaun Cox”

I literally laughed out loud at that one. Is his sister named "DKNY"?

The four teens should all be charged with murder for the death of their accomplice.

Folks in Minnesota would probably vote to have a million more Somalis if they could. That’s how stupid most of them are. Not all of them — just the majority of them.

I said most of them. They consistently put in liberals. They must love the muslims being dumped on the state.

I know some wonderful conservative people in Minnesota. I believe most would agree with me.

If he’d been carrying a 45 - one shot to the head would have been sufficient to end the confrontation. If you are going to carry a firearm, then make sure it’s of a “one-shot-drop” caliber.

Amazing that blacks make up 12.9% of the population but make up most of the violent crime.

That's only half the story. Yes, blacks are about 12% or so, but the very young and very old aren't committing the crimes.
When you consider that it's only the young men and teenagers, it works out to about 3 or 4 percent of the population.

True. And it is such a shame.

I know a few young black men that are just outstanding people. Unfortunately, my guess is that they get profiled too because of so many black thugs. They certainly don’t want to live among the thugs.

It seems the media only wants to glorify black thugs. It’s a difficult road for the ones that want to do things the right way — especially if they don’t have a good stable home life with a father and a mother.

Thanks...... Nautica is a fashion brand which I was only dimly aware of. So this perspiring yoof was named after a fashion brand! And his sister DKNY (fashions) who knows? Everyone’s a freelancer these days.

Exactly. I was surprised that wasn’t mentioned in the charges. ....I thought accomplices were charged with murder if one of theirs was killed while they were committing a felony.

The victim wasn’t out on a summer night to shoot someone.

When confronted, he saved his life as well as the woman he had just met at a blue moon observation point.

He reacted. He stopped the threat. He rendered aid.

He followed the law.

I cannot imagine what it would be to take a life, no matter the circumstances.

You shoot for body mass, not little targets like heads, until threat is gone.

I prefer a fully loaded .360. It is a short 9mm and has less stopping power, however it is significantly lighter, easier to handle and much more likely to be carried due to its’ small size and light weight.

A forty-five is great, but hard as hell to put in the front pocket of your shorts or even in the waistband of your pants. It almost has to be carried as a shoulder holster weapon and that means at the very least a light jacket and an uncomfortable day.

Besides any gun would have sent this idiot down as he was obviously untrained and unaccustomed to proper handling of weapons.

BTW: it is harsh, but he is of no great loss to anyone, particularly the greater society of St. Paul.
