John Boehner stays silent on Weiner scandal

House Speaker John Boehner hasn’t said much about Rep. Anthony Weiner’s unfolding sex scandal, and he isn’t likely to anytime soon.

While the Ohio Republican is responsible for protecting the House as an institution, he’s also his party’s leader — and most Republicans seem content to watch Weiner flounder.

“This is right now a problem for Representatives Nancy Pelosi, Steve Israel and Debbie Wasserman Schultz and the focus needs to remain on Representatives Nancy Pelosi, Steve Israel and Debbie Wasserman Schultz,” a GOP leadership aide said of the House minority leader, the head of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and the chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee. “If [Weiner’s] party leaders don’t act, there could be some kind of institutional requirement. Will Boehner Give Obama Everything in Lame Duck?

Can you decipher the unique language used by Republican leaders? Here is a quick test.

At his first post-election press conference, House Speaker John Boehner said: "My job is to listen to the American people. The American people have made it clear, they're not for Obamacare. Ask all those Democrats who lost their elections Tuesday night."

He also said: "So, the House, I'm sure, at some point next year, we'll move to repeal Obamacare because it should be repealed and it should be replaced with common sense reforms that respect the doctor/patient relationship."

Did Boehner mean:

1) He intends for the House to terminate implementation of Obamacare at some point in the next year.

2) He intends for the House to ensure Obamacare is implemented next year.

The speaker has said that he “disagrees” with the calls of some advocating impeachment of the president. As long as he holds the speaker’s gavel, he can effectively take that option off the table.

President Obama is required by the Constitution “to take care that the laws be faithfully executed.” Every day, President Obama is violating his oath. So Speaker Boehner is asking the judiciary to act as referee in this contest.

It may be that there is yet another way to compel the president to do his duty. The Constitution gives the legislature “the power of the purse.” This means that if both branches of the legislature agree on a series of Appropriations Bills, they can provide money to keep the government functioning and still take away the money for such things as implementing the Obamacare individual mandate.

This year began with an election on whether Rep. John Boehner should continue as the Speaker of the House of Representatives. A number of brave House conservatives, led by Rep. Jim Bridenstine (R-OK), Tom Massie, and Rep. Steve King (R-IA), waged a historic effort to deny Boehner the Speakership. What resulted was an earth-shattering groundswell of grassroots opposition to Boehner that shocked every Republican congressman. It was unsuccessful only because a handful of otherwise reliable House conservatives chose to support Boehner and give him another chance. And look at what their vote for Boehner has wrought in just two short months.

It resulted in a historic cave from a personal and iron-clad commitment to fight “tooth and nail” to block the President’s executive amnesty on the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) appropriations bill. Late last year, everyone knew the plan to split off the rest of the funding for the federal government into the “cromnibus,” leaving DHS alone to be funded, had no chance of success. Yet Rep. John Boehner promised he would fight. He ended up fighting only in words. He failed to commit the financial resources of his party to move Senate Democrats off a still-untenable position of filibustering a bill to fund the DHS. The implications of this cave go far beyond the policy of amnesty. The Speaker is not just the partisan leader of House Republicans. He is the guardian of the House as an institution and its prerogatives, namely the power of the purse, and in bowing to this President, Boehner showed himself to be unfit for the office.
