A couple of things: we now know that his *handgun* was what's been described in some reports as a *pellet gun,* an airsoft in others. And his as-described *hatchet* was actually a combat tomahawk.
He additionally was using pepper spray in his attack, spraying at least two female victims, and possibly also the one he injured with the tomahawk:
