The only real question is whether the place was Spanish before it was Mormon.
If it was, then it is el negro Bill cañón. And since Utah was won in the Treaty of Hidalgo, then that means it used to be northern Mexico, and a cattle rancher would have used Hispanics for cowboys.
So, el negro Bill cañón is not just an outside possibility, but a real one.
I wonder if progressive are agitating to change the Spanish for black to the English for black?

"Colored People" bad, "People of Color" good. See the difference, it is all a matter of "of"...

propose to the NAACP that we change the name to a number designation. so that when the name is changed that we wont have to revisit the issue in 30 years when that becomes offensive. I see it now canyon 234 in utah... this might be the answer to all the offensive names we find on maps and all the offensive names for schools and national monuments.

There is some kind of Black cowboy museum in Brooklyn where Linden bvld turns into S. Conduit. They have the names of black cowboys on signs all along the fence. I'll look for this guy's name next time I pass there.

Negro’ in Spanish....means black.
So, what’s the problem? They don’t like the word negro/black?
Seems to me the negro/black community for decades embraced the word negro. In fact, many address themselves and or friends with the ..igger name.
I realize this skirts the ol PC line, but damn, someone has got to say it like it is.

OK, let’s rename it:
Jamichael Canyon
-or-
Késhaun Canyon
-or-
Qua’sean Canyon

Since I cannot find pictures of these two women, and I don't know their actual races, I suspect Grand County Councilwoman Mary McGann to be white. On the other hand I suspect Jeanetta Williams to be black (or perhaps claim to be black - due to a make believe black parent). Here is Jennetta's take on it:
Jeanetta Williams, president of the Salt Lake City chapter of the NAACP, says the name isn't offensive. She's drumming up support to keep the name that makes it clear the canyon is named for a black historical figure.
To: TigerClaws
Incorrect title. NAACP actually wants to keep the name.
