QUEENSLAND dodged a potential disaster as the most severe earthquake in nearly a century struck yesterday.
The magnitude 5.7 earthquake recorded 110km east of Fraser Island at 1.38pm was the second time the state had been rattled in three days.
Yesterdays quake was equal in force to the December 1989 Newcastle earthquake which killed 13 people, levelled much of the city centre and damaged 50,000 buildings.
But Queenslanders were spared any injuries or serious damage by the off-shore location of yesterdays quake, about 10km north-west from where Thursdays occurred.
If this had hit Noosa, there would have been deaths and damaged buildings, Geoscience Australia seismologist Dan Jaksa said.
The latest tremor was much more powerful than the 5.3 magnitude shake on Thursday.
It was 10-15 times bigger in terms of intensity, Mr Jaksa said.
It was the strongest to hit the state since 1918, when a magnitude 6 earthquake occurred offshore from Bundaberg and Gladstone.
Mr Jaksa said they now regarded Thursdays shake as a foreshock to the latest one.
Yesterdays tremor was felt from Bundaberg to the Gold Coast. There were no reports of damage.
The Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre said there was no threat.

FYI...
Have a friend in Noosaville; he said his house was trembling from last week’s - haven’t heard about this latest one yet.
