Thanks to Disney and their "humanizing" of animals. That idea predates Disney. It's part of the code the Original Programmer wrote into us.
Whether he grew up with it or heard it in a cowboy/western movie like I think I might have, back on the farm the old man used to tell my brother and sister not to name anything they were going to eat.
