Has Donald Trump made his first serious boo-boo of the campaign?

For weeks, the media have trumpeted the supposed death of the Trump campaign. First, they claimed, Trump’s campaign imploded on launch thanks to his comments about illegal immigration. Then they claimed that Trump was finished because of his slap at Senator Sen. John McCain (R-AZ)43% ’s (R-AZ) war service. But neither of those comments alienated Trump’s base – he’s maintained his seven point lead over Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker in the 2016 presidential polls, with no other candidate breaking double-digits in the polls. In fact, his original comments about illegal immigration launched his candidacy to prominence, with many Americans relieved that a major candidate had finally touched the media third rail and talked openly about illegal immigrant criminality.

Now, however, Trump may have damaged himself with the very people excited by his candidacy. Asked point blank about his immigration policy, Trump dropped the brashness and the blurting, and suddenly went completely Hillary-vague on CNN. After blathering about deporting criminal illegal immigrants – even President Obama pays lip service to this idea – Trump continued:

Census Bureau data collected from 2009 to 2011, which allows for detailed analysis of all 472 separate occupations, shows that there were only a handful of majority-immigrant occupations. Thus, there really are no jobs that Americans won't do. Further, we estimated the share of occupations that are comprised of illegal immigrants, and found that there are no occupations in which the majority of workers are illegally in the country.

Immigrants, legal and illegal are taking American jobs and depressing wages. There is a reason why our labor participation rates are at 38 year lows or that this is the lowest teenage employment rates since the end of WWII. The native born are being screwed and the middle class destroyed.

Right now I am happy to accept locating all criminally violent illegals and deport them first. Only candidate with a chance to win nomination who is talking about it is Donald Trump.

So how does Trump propose deporting an estimated 2 million criminal aliens? And how do you define "violent?" Would you deport DUI offenders?

They all talk about securing the border without exception. You will hear it next Thursday. All politicians talk about securing the border.

I do to. Trump put a face on the American victims of criminal alien crime. Heretofore, all we heard were sob stories about the "undocumented" living in the shadows and separated from their families. Unfortunately, Trump started feeling the heat and although he didn't apologize, he started backtracking talking about how much he loved the Mexican people and the need to allow the good ones to stay and to help the Dreamers. Too bad. He is going to lose some support because of his retreating and waffling.

No, I have not researched it from a sterile laptop. I have interviewed those without jobs who have had their jobs taken by immigrants, legal and illegal. For example, I met a black stonemason in his 40s, a veteran. He was getting part-time work in DC. He was earning less per hour than he got 20 years earlier in NC. Most of the people he worked with spoke Spanish only. They really didn't accept him on the job. And the supervisors, most of whom were Hispanic, treated him the same way.

I helped organize and participated in the 2013 March for Jobs in DC. It was done in conjunction with the the Black American Leadership Alliance (BALA).

If they were all raptured out of here tomorrow, there would not be anything like a one to one employment of Americans, because until we reform welfare, Americans will continue to do things like work for cash themselves here and there while taking up benefits...or just live with mama and hang out at Starbucks. It’s also a cultural thing...the willingness to do rote labor month after month is not there.
