I’ve handled a number of defamation cases for newspapers/magazines/etc. Typically, they like to fight tooth and nail—many believe that their journalistic ethics (ha!) demand it, and that having a reputation for doing so helps to attract talented writers. In this case? Where they’ve already retracted and apologized? Where the editor has already resigned? They are going to want to make this thing go away ASAP.
