Democrats Promise to Kill Bill De-Funding Planned Parenthood; Harry Reid: “Good Luck With That”
“The Senate will vote next week on a GOP bill that could eliminate the $540 million in government funding the group receives, according to Republican aides. Also under consideration is a narrower provision that would put in place a moratorium on funding for the group until a congressional investigation is completed into alleged sales of fetal tissue from abortions,” the report says.
But Democrats are already planning to filibuster the bill and kill it and they are wrapping their filibuster threat in women’s health care — even though selling aborted babies does nothing to advance women’s health care:
Seeking to thwart Democratic criticism that such a move would undermine women’s health, GOP leaders may move to reprogram Planned Parenthood funds to other women’s programs. But Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid and other top Democrats already rejected that idea, and say they have the votes to defeat the GOP effort.
“Good luck with that,” Reid said on Tuesday.
“I am furious that Republicans are once again trying to take away basic health care services for 2.7 million women,” said Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.). “We have stood strong before that we are going to make sure that women in this country have health care available, Planned Parenthood provides it. For Republicans to take it away is wrong.”
Montana Democratic Sen. Jon Tester echoed Murray’s sentiments.
“It’s ridiculous. Women use this for health care in a big, big way,” Tester said. “It’s crazy. Let’s repeal the Affordable Care Act while we’re at it.”
The Lankford Senate bill, Defund Planned Parenthood Act, would set a one-year moratorium on Planned Parenthood funding from the government, unless the organization ceases performing abortions, his office informed LifeNews.com. This would allow more federal dollars to go toward organizations like community health centers, which serve low-income populations and provide direct health care to women across the country without also killing unborn children in abortions.
“The recent videos uncovering Planned Parenthood’s inhumane abortion practices have hit a nerve with many Americans,” said Lankford. “While the government investigates Planned Parenthood to determine if their practice of adapting their abortion procedures to harvest the organs of children violates federal law, they should not continue to receive taxpayer money. Planned Parenthood receives more than $500 million in taxpayer money every year.”
