Mullah Mohammad Omar, the obscure, one-eyed zealot who led the Taliban from its beginnings as a band of student insurrectionists through a fateful alliance with Osama bin Laden, to military defeat following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and the movements re-emergence as an insurgency that threatened the American occupation in Afghanistan, died more than two years ago in Pakistsan, according to Afghanistans intelligence agency and the office of Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani. The cause of death was unclear.

He had been well known to be in Karachi, suffering from of hepatitis. His command absence has been noted for several years.
What is odd is the lack of bickering over whom would assume command. Very likely he may just be incapacitated.
The Pakistani’s have announced his death twice before.
