The flip side is that, because university cops typically engage in low key law enforcement and typically interact with college students, faculty and staff, they may lack the experience necessary to deal with other individuals (like, for instance, the dead guy in this case). They may have the same formal training as other cops, but their day-to-day experience is vastly different.

Another reason why reputable private investigation firms many time avoid hiring retired cops. It’s that “Do as I say now” threatening or intimidating mentality drilled into them. That can make an interview go belly up real fast. People get defensive and clam up etc etc.
