Attacking establishment Republicans like McConnell and Hatch helps Cruz.

Not attacking Trump helps Cruz when the Donald falters. (And he will falter at some point.)

That's not what Hume was talking about. He recognizes that Cruz is doing what's in his own interest. But he's saying that the principle Ted Cruz invoked to explain why he didn't go after Trump should have kept him from going after McConnell. He may be wrong about that, but to say that Ted was doing what's in Ted's best interest isn't a defense against a charge of hypocrisy. If anything, it supports Hume's charge.
