on July 22, Joe Graham from Air Compliance is writing a complaint form for “objectionable odor” from Jordan’s property where he was barbecuing. A neighbor living across the street called to complain, as she has apparently done many times before.
This time she found a willing co-conspirator.
“I can smell it again right now, but I’m on your property,” Graham tells the group. “You’re allowed to have it smell on your property, so that doesn’t count, but when I’m on the street, that’s when it counts.”
“So we’re supposed to control the smoke and the wind and where it’s blowing it?” he asks.
The Environmental Specialist says, “What you’re doing looks like it may be counter to the rule as far as the objectionable odor,” as he looks at his clipboard for reassurance.
“You have smoke leaving…that’s prohibited. I saw smoke leaving your property.” So he’s going to “write it up and send it to our department.”
The ridiculous nature of this visit results from the fact that in Pinellas County, “Commercial barbecue cookers are not exempt from causing a nuisance odor,”. It is part of a larger set of rules regarding air quality, normally reserved for things like asbestos and trash burning.
However, Mr. Jordan should have nothing to fear. The Frequently Asked Questions goes further to state, “If a sufficient number of complaints, representing different households, are reported and an Inspector witnesses the problem, they can issue a Warning Letter.”
According to this, he could not get a Warning Letter unless more than one neighbor complained. And this is unlikely to happen, since, according to Jordan, “Everybody else cooks out around here.”
The cameraman says, “We’ve been living here for 40 years, and this is the first time this happened.”
He is referring to the visit from Air Compliance. Since the neighbor moved in three years ago and began complaining, she has called the police and fire departments. “They tell me to go ahead on” and keep barbecuing, according to Jordan.
Graham has an answer for this too. “The police and the fire department are looking at different parts of the rule.”
And so continues the endless splitting of hairs, red herrings, and absence of common sense that characterizes nanny state bureaucracies

I was just thinking the other day about the couple in California which was targeted for holding Bible studies at their home, through parking regulations. The left is trying to go after the tax-exempt status of Christian churches, and people blithely say, even people who are on our side and support freedom of religion, that that’s a good thing, because it will force Biblical Christians to completely separate from government, and if they have to resort to home churches, so be it. OK, but what next, when they start going after home churches through parking and other regulations? What then? What about the financial ability of churches to support ministries such as Christian academies?
I heard a story of someone in SoCal spraying the word ‘ASS’ on a neighbor’s lawn because he pissed him off. Dude was never able to get it off his lawn.
The man should invite his neighbor over for BBQ lunch with all the fixings.

He must have used Pramitol or Atrazine 80W.With those agents,you’d have to remove all soil down to 8 inches or so to get the lawn growing again.

Some guy at a libertarian forum told us about his Guatemalan neighbors who, after clogging up the plumbing of their home, literally hung their azzes out of the second-story window to do their business. It’s ironic....that those guys being “victimized” by the fascist left city authorities probably voted for Obama, the virtual leader of the fascist left. Unintended consequences.
So what’s next? Outlawing the smoke from people’s fireplaces in the winter? I wouldn’t doubt it one bit.

The EPA has mandated new standards for outdoor wood furnaces.The current models can only be sold until the end of this year.The new lower emission model will cost thousands more,and will require very dry wood to function.
As an employee, I be ashamed to confront that American. I’d say “I got a complaint from the broad over there, and I’m telling you about it. Do what you want.” Then leave.
A far better, and less destreuctive way is to fertilize the devil out of the lawn in question, ensuring that there is enough left on the surface that the object of your affections sees it and waters the powder away.
3 weeks later...
In my neighborhood,I expect it every weekend. Many times coming from me. There’s nothing better. Brisket, ribs,sausage, and chicken. If you’re going to fire up the smoker, might as well smoke enough to last a while.
Oh, did I mention do the fertilizing in a pattern, say a love note or somesuch?
