I think you are quite wrong about that.
One of the most telling facts about what passes for politics in the US today is the consensus that the two inevitable candidates (Bush - Clinton) are the two that nobody wants. I mean, nobody.
The power structure has gotten so weak that only an election between two losers can preserve their power.
I think for a good percentage of the Democrat base, Hillary is seen as almost a conservative. Heck, they think Obama is a disappointment because he so far hasn’t quite been able to transform America into a super-sized version of North Korea.

The way surveys work for conservatives, the same holds true for hardcore liberals. They may say that Hillary! is no longer their candidate of choice, but they love her, drool over her and consider her the only viable candidate in the entire universe. (Liberal/Progressive/Communist zeal is equal to that of evangelical Christians; their saviours are designated by the Democrat heirarchy and the heirarchy is infallible.)
