My white ancestors came to America as indentured servants. All were cotton pickers right up to my grandparents who picked cotton as sharecroppers until the dust bowl brought them out west ala Grapes of Wrath

Has the ‘cartoon’ made the rounds and arrived here -

A message saying ‘Bayer(?) Aspirin’ has to quit putting the cotton in the bottle because people were being traumatized ‘picking cotton’ in order to get to the aspirin?

We should’ve picked our own cotton.

Lincoln wanted to expatriate about a million of them to work on the Panama Canal, and then leave them there. Of course that was about 35 years before Walter Reed showed up to break the back of yellowjack and other mosquito-borne diseases.

My own guess is that the first million would have died on their shovels, and a second million would have to be recruited, or drafted, to replace them.

A lot of those files related to exploratory negotiations with the Colombian government (New Grenada) have been gone through and filletted by Lincoln-protective busy fingers.
