In the 80's, MTV would play music from bands and artists whose music wasn't being played on the radio. This helped some acts, like Gabriel break though to a wider audience.

Funny how many people back then didn't even realize he was the former lead singer of Genesis.

Funny thing is that none of them are really my kind of music but they do have a nostalgic attraction today.
