All US service members are and were bound by the Code of Conduct which prohibits early parole. Stockdale's order was redundant of the Code. McCain following the Code does not make him a hero.

Imagine living in that hell hole (I was there in ‘08) with a broken arm that was never set right, and the son of an admiral that every piss ant guard wants to get “street creds” by beating up!
