Reread Stockdale's statment:
"He was eventually taken to the same rat-infested hospital room I had occupied two years earlier, and, like me, he had surgery on his leg. By then the Vietnamese had discovered that his father was the ranking admiral in the Pacific Fleet, and he received an offer that, as far as I know, was made to no other American prisoner: immediate release, no strings attached. He refused, thereby sentencing himself to four more years in a cell.
Do you understand what 'no strings attached' means? We're left with two choices: You'd sink in a sea of lead, or Admiral Stockdale is a liar.
What I’m saying is Admiral Stockdale contradicts himself. He said McCain, AS FAR AS I KNOW, was offered early release. Then he says they all knew that to get offered an early release you had to grovel. That means others WERE offered early release.
Or is he saying McCain’s offer, with no strings attached, was an offer no one else received? But the four key words to me are “as far as I know”.
McCain has never, AS FAR AS I KNOW, said “I turned down an early release because Stockdale ordered we all turn down early release offers”. He has allowed others to make him out the hero that he wasn’t.
Frankly, I’m more pissed at those than I am at anyone. Say one thing bad about McCain and you always get “But McCain is a war hero.” I know of another war hero who shot down 5 MIGs. He’s now in a prison for taking bribes. To me, he gave up his hero status. McCain gave up his, assuming he deserved it, when he threw the families of MIA under the bus and supported Kerry over the Swift Boat veterans and slandered Cruz and every voter who disagrees with him.
Finally, do a search and you’ll find many of his fellow prisoners who hate him and say he’s a fraud.
