The quote I saw was ‘McCain is a war hero because he was captured. I like (heroes) who weren’t captured.’
The sentence immediately before that was “He’s not a war hero.”
Correct. In other words, his act of heroism was enduring torture and imprisonment. While that was awful, don’t we usually consider acts to be heroic when the person has a choice, and chooses the course that puts a greater good or the welfare of another over that of ones self.
If a person is falsely imprisoned for a crime they did not commit, we don’t call them a hero.
“He is a war hero.”
From Atkisson’s article referred to in another Posting:
Trump said,
“He’s a war hero because he was captured.”
“Hes a war hero, because he was captured.”
“I believe, perhaps, hes a war hero. But right now, hes said some very bad things about a lot of people.”
Attkisson asks, “Did Trump say McCain is not a war hero because he was captured? No, not in the exchanges represented in the Post.”
“He is a war hero.”
