I don’t think you get the joke. It is about the people who “trust God” and will only except miracles. They never see the hand of God in common, everyday things and people. It is supposed to remind us that God almost always works through the mundane.
I see your point, but from the other interpretation he could not leave the safety of the roof for the boat, helicopter or whatever because he was waiting for the “perfect” answer to his predicament by God. Anyway, I love the joke....reminds me of a couple of people I knew.
