Fake soldier pretended to be a US Army Captain in Afghanistan on Match.com dating site to trick lonely women out of £400,000
Tosin Femi Olasemo, 37, pretended to be American Captain Morgan Travis
Nigerian fraudster used profile picture of man wearing full military uniform
He soon struck up intense relationships with women and asked for money
Has been jailed for four and a half years after admitting 12 counts of fraud
A Nigerian fraudster masqueraded as a US Army captain serving in Afghanistan on an online dating profile to scam lonely women out of more than £400,000.
Tosin Femi Olasemo, 37, was allowed into Britain on a student visa, where he set up a Match.com profile from his Cardiff home, pretending to be an American serviceman.
The women believed heroic Captain Morgan Travis was on the lonely hearts website looking for love.
But a court heard it was Nigerian-born Olasemo, 37, who used a picture of a soldier wearing full military uniform as his profile picture.
He began 'intense online relationships' with the women before beginning to ask for small amounts of money to help pay for leave to visit them over two years.
Prosecutor Ruth Smith said money soon started spiralling into a fortune after he had 'brainwashed' women into believing they were in a real relationship.
Olasemo claimed he was stationed at Camp Joyce, a remote base in eastern Afghanistan near the Pakistan border, where about 700 U.S. soldiers, lived.
Police contacted the United States military to try and work out who the soldier was - but they were unable to identify him.

Woman are more stupid today than ever! ...and I am one.
Send him to the ‘stan to probe for IEDs.
If Obama had a son/cousin/brother/sibling/once-removed....
Since when does anyone send money to a person they’ve never met?! 400,00 pounds? Holy cow!
I was stupid and naive in my youth, but I’m 67 now, and a whole lot smarter. Thank God I wrote up 37 years ago.
If he identifies with being a soldier, he should get all the benefits. Who are we to judge? .......Sarcasm, one the free services I offer.
To any of you women, I am stuck here in Tierra del Fuego. I have been trapped here after I walked out of an airline crash in the mountains. I really need some cash so I can make it home in time to visit my poor sick mother.
And by the way, she always hoped i’d meet a nice girl like you.
Contact me for the account details, or we could even just do this with Western Union.
Thank you very much. And I’m very glad I met you.
Still...today’s young women and old are pretty stupid. Most have their faces in selfies falsely believing they’re attractive......until they open their mouth.
I remember a date with a pretty well known individual, though I didn’t know that as I was pretty new to the area. When we began speaking he commented under his breath...”Oh she’s smart too!”.....and I called him on that comment saying...”You do know that that comment speaks volumes about your choice of woman so where does that put me?” HE ended up apologizing of course.
My point is with a bit of makeup and hair style any woman can improve her appearances....but that’s just another face if the inner woman isn’t developed to be a real lady.
I heard about a Kenyan fraudster who not only gets paid $500,000 a year but has scammed us for trillions and brought us to the brink of ruin.
“and I called him on that comment saying...You do know that that comment speaks volumes about your choice of woman so where does that put me? HE ended up apologizing of course.”
Ahhhh,,yesss,,, getting “called” on silly meaningless chick points of order. I would guess you aren’t dating him any longer? Just a hunch.
He may identify as a soldier but, at least he is not orange.
No...it went about 6 weeks because we did have a lot of fun together. But I knew when it was time to call it. Rubber necks are never comfortable to be with for more than just fun. They usually show their real colors in about that time frame...can’t wear a mask without it slipping.
I was new and refreshing...the guy was infatuated with new experiences, in life and with people. He had never been with a Christian so that was new for him. So this challenged him in and of itself.
The AARP mag that I get in my junk mail had a very detailed, similar story about an American widow who sent 6 figures to a Nigerian posing as an international businessman. They have the “grooming” process down to an art. Kinda sad.
