The U.S. government ran a budget surplus in June, leaving the budget deficit so far this year running under last years level.
The Treasury Department says the surplus in June totaled $51.8 billion, compared to a surplus of $70.5 billion a year ago. However, the larger 2014 monthly surplus was heavily influenced by a timing quirk that had moved June benefit payments into May last year because June 1 fell on a Saturday.
For the current budget year, the government is running a deficit of $313.4 billion, a 14.3 percent reduction from the imbalance over the first nine months of the previous budget year.
The Congress Budget Office is forecasting that the deficit for the entire budget year will be $486 billion, about the same as last year.

God help me, I am about to agree with John Boehner on something.
This is giving the addict more cocaine.
In other words:
“In June the US did not pay $51.1 Billion towards it’s debt. Let’s buy some crack man, we got money!”
That’s a long way from paying for the $9 trillion bill Obama ran up.
Funny how we always have a “surplus” during tax season, and yet we still wind up with a year-end deficit and the national debt keeps climbing and climbing. Must be Bush’s fault.
Quick, spend it.

Well looky here....just enough to pay Iran.....
Just agree with the writer that fed him those words to say, not the man himself.
7 years into “recovery” and we still have a $486 billion deficit.
The US Government and its thousands of social engineering schemes could not survive if we had a real currency, instead of the socialized, unbacked, centrally-controlled currency and massive debt we have now.
There is NO WAY conservatives will ever limit the size of government and the massive social changes it brings, as long as our present monetary and financial system continue in their present form.
Yeah! Caught a wave on a sea of red ink.

Still headed for the rocks though.
This by the same people calling the economy a recovery.
The government is stealing so much taxpayer money even they don’t have time to spend it all, and I’m supposed to cheer?
When the US and world economy collapses and chaos follows, I’m assuming the US won’t owe the 18+ trillion to anybody. Maybe that’s why the government can rack up so much debt without a conscience. Wait for the doomsday to come and they can ctrl-alt-delete - reboot...
Pantload alert combined with mathematically challenged ignorant AP writers.
Just once I would like to see one of these liberal public school graduates make note of the hundreds of billions that have been moved off the books so as to not appear in the deficit. Last I recall Fanny & Freddy were chewing up about $400 billion that mysteriously vanished off the deficit column.
Obama will be furloughing nurses at Walter Reed again soon.
Another half a trillion in debt by the end of the year. That is over $1,500 for every citizen. Wow.
"I knew Obama could fart rainbows."
