D.C.s delegate to Congress urged the Washington Redskins to throw in the towel after a key loss in court over the team name.
Last year, the United States Patent and Trademark Offices Trademark Trial and Appeal Board decided 2-1 not to renew the teams trademark registration, ruling that Redskins is offensive to American Indians. The case went to court, and today U.S. District Judge Gerald Bruce Lee upheld the Patent Office decision.
Lee noted that Websters Collegiate Dictionary, in 1898, defined Redskins as an often contemptuous word, 70 years before the first team trademark was granted. The ruling doesnt ban the team from using the name or logo, but trademarking it.
Redskins President Bruce Allen said the team is taking the case up to the 4th District Court of Appeals.
We are convinced that we will win on appeal as the facts and the law are on the side of our franchise that has proudly used the name Washington Redskins for more than 80 years, he said in a statement.
Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.) said that after the Patent Office and federal court rulings, I hope that [owner] Dan Snyder gets on with his real business of getting the team back in winning form and selecting a new mascot.
The national public outcry has been overwhelming and it is clear residents do not want their beloved Washington football team name to be aligned with the disparagement of Native Americans or any other ethnic group, Norton said. As a former First Amendment lawyer, I have looked closely at Snyders free speech defense and could find no precedents in federal law that would predict further litigation would be successful. In light of todays ruling, further dependence on the courts could destroy what good will remains for the team and further harm Snyders own reputation.
Surely, these two rulings should summon NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and the 29 other NFL team owners, who benefit from our team, to exercise their leadership and hasten what appears to be the inevitable outcome of changing our teams name.
Indeed—Find a city that appreciates the huge economic boost an NFL team provides.
Mayors of most NFL cities live in perpetual dread that the team will decide to re-locate—It would be something if the ‘skins move out on Obama’s watch.
MD, of course!
Not hat I've heard, but St. John's University Redmen have wimped out to become the Red Storm.
I've said for years that political correctness will be one of the factors in the downfall of our nation. It is nothing more than cultural Marxist used by the Left to silence and bully the opposition.
If a conservative doesn't agree with something, they just don't watch it, read it or participate it anymore and move on.
If a liberal doesn't agree with something, the entire nation is not allowed to watch it, read it or participate in it and they demand that "it" be destroyed.
The Redskins should just STAY in Maryland; tell DC to fugoff.
If I owned the team I’d move it to Oklahoma City.
I’m not a football fan. In fact, living near Baltimore, Sunday afternoons are a great day to shop cause the stores are empty.
If I ever were to purchase a team logo shirt, you can sure bet it will be the Redskins.
RE: If I owned the team Id move it to Oklahoma City.
Oklahoma is next. They’ll force the city to change its name because OKLAHOMA actually means RED PEOPLE.
If you want to see what an 80 year old lesbo looks like....One that was beaten early and often with an ugly stick. Go google up her photos.
She has looked like this for 40 years since she was a hack in NY City. When DC was given two shadow Senators she carpetbagged her way down there to score the US Senator job. She has always been a nasty piece of work
ROTFLMAO.
Amos 'n' Andy was great comedy.
Eleanor Holmes Norton attempting to park a car is Lightnin'-esque.
If they ever do a remake ....
Lightnin’! What a great character.
I don’t think that show was any more demeaning to blacks than white TV sitcoms were to whites. E.g., Lightnin’ wasn’t any worse than Maynard G. Krebs. The characters were actually lovable with their human foibles.
