I’ve heard that refrain before—the 1840’s when the Irish Catholics escaping the Irish Potato Famine showed up, the 1880’s to 1924 when the southern and eastern Europeans showed up, the 1980’s with the Vietnamese boat refugees, and now with the Latinos.

What an insulting comparison. There is no comparison.

The third worlders pouring over our Southern border are doing it ILLEGALLY. The are not wanting to assimilate. The vast majority cross knowing they will get freebies. They are for the most part anti-American and very anti-English. All this is different from the groups you listed.

This third world invasion will utterly destroy our culture and America as we have known it.

We are being turned into a decaying third world sewer.

You are disgusting with the implications in your post -- very incendiary on your part.

I'd almost agree, but it took almost three generations before the descendants of the Catholic Irish immigrants who escaped the Irish Potato Famine finally assimilated to US society. I've read the history of Irish immigration from the 1840's on to the USA and between their illiteracy (many couldn't even read or write the Irish Gaelic language, let alone speak English!) and their Catholic faith (which was enormously mistrusted--many Americans in the 19th Century viewed Catholicism with a lot of suspicion), small wonder why the famous phrase No Irish Need Apply only scratched the surface of the huge discrimination against that ethnic group.

Indeed, the movie Gangs of New York is based on the history of those Irish immigrants, living in some of the worst slums in Manhattan at the time.
