aren’t the locals mostly the descendents of invading arab muslims anyway? the descendents of the actual ancient egyptians are pretty much gone now (i think only the copts are genetically closely descended from them), replaced by the arabian sons of mohammed.
at least this has always been my understanding... that the arab conquerors basically converted/killed/raped the ancient egyptians and then bred with their women over centuries, thus the resulting modern egyptians have became more arabian than ancient egyptian.
This is a question that can probably now be answered, by DNA testing.
My 1965 Britannica wrote that the current Egyptians were probably descendants of the ancient Egyptians, but that was unscientific.
For example, Kennewick Man has recently been shown to have really been an American Indian, after years of uncertainty.
I wonder if the current Greeks are descended from the ancient Greeks, or mostly from the Slav invasders of the Middle Ages. Also would be interesting to know the background of the current Anatolians.
