Every year the Fourth of July is marked by ringing affirmations of American exceptionalism. We are a special nation, uniquely founded on high ideals like freedom and equality. In practice, however, much of what sets the United States apart from other countries today is actually Southern exceptionalism.

Good point!
Don’t tell Kentucky regular people they aren’t southern
They bristle
Hobnobs at Browns in Louisville might think they are Midwestern
But drive over from Cincinatti to Covington and hear accents change and sweet tea becomes available and that big water tower with Y’all on it
Less than one percent KY voted for the tall bearded guy in 1860
And most of that was in the county of his birth
I know people in extreme southern Illinois and Indiana claim to be southern too and don’t talk yankee
This guy is an academic from Texas who like nascar and some country music acts is ashamed of where he comes from and those around him
Funny a few years ago he lamented how Trotsky style northern Jews had usurped the ideology of the republican establishment
While there is some truth to that he sure got scolded by the never generalize about Jews media
I think he’s just a secularist crotchety wordsmith
Was he so dishonest or cowardly to not admit who does the crimes in the south mostly
Blacks
I have been think that a lot more these past few years.
Way back when the earth was still cooling off I lived in a Louisville suburb for a while, and the people were as "southern" in culture, speech, and overall way of life as the people in FL where my maternal ancestors pioneered a decade before the War of Northern Aggression was declared. Don't know how it is there nowadays, but I would bet that the folks I knew still consider themselves to be southerners.
If they haven't all passed away that is, and that's a real possibility since I'm old enough to remember those long ago days when Florida was populated by actual Floridians.
The author could of replaced South with black and it would be the same exact article. Almost all the problems he sees in the South are due to the South having a higher percentage of blacks.

A similar story: When we moved to KY we had to get our WA state cars inspected and transferred to KY plates. I go to the sheriff’s office and tell the lady what I need. She walks out and gets the vin off the car and we go back in. She said it’s a $5 fee. I try to use my credit card and they say they only take cash, which I don’t have. They say, “No problem, just bring the money later.” They give me my plates and registration and I’m on my way.
Two days later my wife goes in to pay the $5 and they say, “Don’t worry about it. We took care of it.”
In Seattle, a surley member of Holder’s people in sweats and fluffy slippers would have said, “NEXT” and shuffled us to the side. To be fair, it’s due to the sheer quantity of people in the city. It’s why I’m DONE with cities.
I play the Lincoln Jamboree most Saturdays (it’s a few blocks from the Lincoln log cabin).
But yeah, I work in Louisville (an 80 mile drive from my home) and few people there have the accent. Meanwhile, it took months to understand much of anything some of my neighbors said. :-)
