Exactly. Probably the primary reason why my ancestors left Europe — famine and oppression. The journey to the US was not trivial with the likelihood of returning nil. It was a one way trip.
Also, why the first amendment exists — freedom of and freedom from religion.
Freedom from a national Church.like the Church of Ireland. Massachusetts had a state church until the 1830s. Even there the “free” churches existed in large numbers. When the Unitarians captured the state church, the orthodox denominations, who were in the majority, voted to disestablish the state church.
