In the wake of several Gettysburg-area stores making announcements on if they'll continue to sell Confederate flag-related merchandise, the Lutheran Theological Seminary is making its stand.
Saturday, the day before a Living History event was slated to take place on the seminary's campus, the administration announced it would be banning symbols of hate speech and racism on seminary grounds, said the Rev. John Spangler, executive assistant to the president for communication and planning.
The ban prohibits the display of the flag or flags associated with the Confederate States of America, Spangler said.
"The subsequent use by other groups have made this impossible to maintain the symbol of what the flag stands for," he said.
The seminary still did host re-enactors from the American Living History Education Society Sunday, but without the Confederate flag, Spangler said. The re-enactment took place to depict scenes from the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg.
Many of the re-enactors did not know about the ban until getting there and most were not happy, Spangler said.

THIS is the seminary in question, controlled by the Army of Northern Virginia for most of the battle:
Gettysburg Bike Week is in a couple weeks.
This should be interesting.
Ban symbols of "hate speech" by enacting fascism, which is pure hate speech and oppression (and whitewashing of history). Got it. Your short moustache is showing, Spangler.
I have not forgotten my promise/quest.
I will give you a boots on the ground report in mid-July.
At the next reenactment there those playing CSA troops should dress instead as Smurfs, movie monsters, Disney characters, etc. since they’re now not allowed to identify which side they’re on.
Getting beyond ridiculous.
I appreciate the right of a private or even government institution to restrict what is shown on its grounds, but to ban it even during legitimate reenactments which try to reflect real events is absurd.
Just wondering what flags will be flying in future battle re-enactments?
Bttt
Confederate reenactors should just refuse to participate.
What incredible courage 150 years later on this now populist issue.
The goal is to end reenactments (see: “Things White People Do”) with the purpose of making us ignorant of our history.
So are they removing all crosses, too? They were used as symbols of hate by the KKK also. Take down everything that was used as a symbol of hate.
I went to a reenactment in Gettysburg a couple years ago. They announced before it began that no reenactor would pretend to be killed because it could frighten the children in attendance. Talk about rewriting history...

There in lies the problem. The Flag is not hate speech. Just because a group or people decides it is does not mean it is. Maybe to them but what about the millions of others that disagree. You have made a poor decision based on PC nonsense. Shame on you...........
There are one hell of a lot of things that need more attention in this nation than eliminating a historical symbol.
Isn’t this going against the 1st Ammendment of free speech?
I am sick of the politically correct crowd.
That shouldn't be too difficult. Most people couldn't tell you in which century the Civil War occurred, name any major battle engagement, or identify any generals.
No. The ignorant masses in this county are good for just one thing; being whipped into a frenzy of indignation over whatever the MSM decides warrants their "attention". Ignorance really is strength.
Ridiculous. When I was a little kid I delighted in pretending to be riddled by machine gun fire before collapsing in death throes. I had it down to an art.
When my kids were little we would tell them the dead raccoon in the street was just sleeping.
Maybe the reenactors will just lay down and go to sleep.
