I’ve been wondering a lot over the last six years, but particularly over the last day or two, if federal government `movers & shakers’ have any idea of the amount of contempt the average American has for them.

Bingo. Although it's hardly even a secret anymore. The next big push will be to lower the age of consent to something around puberty nationwide, and this is one reason Roberts dissented so loudly with regard to gay marriage - if you posit something like that a civil right and take it from the jurisdiction of the states, you can do that with anything regardless of what legislation is in place at the state level. That's the game. Leverage power through the federal government and you don't have to put it up to a vote anywhere that it will certainly lose.
Many of the people behind these pushes aren't in it for their own sexual preferences, (although a lot of them would happily take that as a side benefit). What they're after is to disempower those of us who object.
