Bush was an absolute disaster, politically. He allowed his opponents to define who he was, especially to lower-information voters, at will. He "accomplished" this, in part, by refusing to do anything other than ignore or laugh at these types of things.
A good rule of thumb, politically, would be:
1) What would Bush do?
2) Do the exact opposite.

Bush would have ignored it and so? Bush ignored attacks on him, on his political allies, and on our servicemen, even those who gave limb and life.
He stood by as those men, and their families, were savaged by these same kind of people Trump is fighting.
Bush is a poor standard to use.
