That didn’t happen with civil divorce and remarriage, but that wasn’t considered a ‘civil right’ and it was a much saner time litigation-wise.
Punishing faiths for not conducting marriages is certainly no more ridiculous a prediction than telling someone in 1985 ‘gay marriage’ would be legal in every state of the union by 2015.

I wonder if Churches could implement a policy that marriages will only be performed to active members of the congregation. And further stipulate they must be active members of a year or more. No one is dicriminated against. Otherwise give them a map to city hall whether they be gay or straight. That should weed out many queers hell bent on bringing down the churches.
