When pitcher Sean Conroy takes the mound in Thursdays Sonoma Stompers game, he has two reasons to be a little nervous.
One, it will be the first start of his professional baseball career after serving as a reliever in the teams first 18 games of the season.
And two, as the starting pitcher on Pride Night, Conroy will be acknowledging publicly that he is gay.
According to the Stompers, Conroy, 23, of Clifton Park, N.Y., is the first openly gay player to enter the professional baseball ranks.
His appearance, as part of gay pride celebrations this month throughout the Bay Area and the nation, is sure to generate headlines for the Stompers, who won attention last week with a visit from the controversial and always colorful Jose Canseco.

Can he pitch? Obviously not or he would be playing in the minors not this alternative pro team. Jose Canseco plays for them, if that tells you anything.
It was better back in the old days when a gay player like Rusty Staub conducted himself with class. Everybody knew it, but Rusty did not make it anybody’s business, while the fans cheered him on when he drove in runs.

The Sonoma Stompers are in the Independant League, not AAA, not AA, not even A. This is where the cast offs go.
Just for reference, last year the Stompers signed Bill Lee, you know, Spaceman Lee, one of the Red Sox most colorful pitchers of the last four decades. Bill Lee turned 67 last year.
I’m not saying he can’t make it to Bigs, many good players have come out of there. He has a ways to go.
Assuming someone doesn’t Just sign him because he’s gay...
