Lots of folks expected us to do something strange and break out in a riot. Well, they just dont know us, the Rev. Norvel Goff told the packed, multiracial congregation of Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, SC, on Sunday.
It was the first service since the horrific slaughter of nine innocent souls by a racist fanatic.
Not being a Christian, I can only marvel at the dignity and courage of the victims relatives who forgave the shooter. If I could ever manage such a thing, it would probably take me decades. It took them little more than a day.
Less shocking, but almost as uplifting, was the conduct of the broader Charleston community, which has been unified and dignified, despite the expectations of some in the media and the accused gunman, whod singled out Charleston because of its success at racial integration.
And this points to Goff being right, not just about Charleston but about the South in general.
There are few subjects that ignite more casual, uninformed bigotry and condescension from elites in this nation than Dixie.

Well don’t tell ‘um, Pilgrim.
I’m just north of Tullahoma. Nice place as is Manchester if you like the fact “fine dining” is a Logan’s Roadhouse off Interstate 24! lol
Most can’t read.
Catfish House!
Oh Yeah! With Turnip greens, Field Peas, and cornbread. Bring the pepper sauce ...
Pepper sauce, GAH. Catfish and ketchup.
Lots of Iced Tea, too. Pepper sauce is for the greens, sweetie.
Oh. I’m not fond of greens, but they’re a common topic in my Weight Watchers meeting at the appropriate time of year. “Miss Kitten,” an adorable, white-haired, retired home-ec teacher, was giving away home-canned collards back around February.
A true Southern delicacy.
And extremely nutritious. We grow red and green lettuce, arugula, kale, and so on.
It was a silly and ugly comparison. I am still burning that Ken Burns compared Lee (Lee!) to Tojo. Again, there are many people in NYC and Washington who are very ignorant about the civil war.
I guess my son Thomas Jackson is going to wish we’d named him Trayvon.
Don’t worry. Most of the idiots who hate the South think that “Stonewall” appeared on his birth certificate.
LOL - True!
Tom is very proud of General Jackson, and he’s big enough to stand up to anyone who might want to change his opinion.
I proposed naming him Nathan Forrest, but that would have given him NFL for his initials. TJL is much better.
I love ole Stonewall. I’ve seen his stuffed horse and stood near to where he was fatally wounded. What a great figure!
I know less about Forrest although I heard today someone was angling to take down his statue. I’m not sure what state.
Tennessee, probably. He lived in Memphis in adulthood, but he was born near where we lived in Manchester before Tom was born. We also saw his cradle ... for unknown reasons, it’s in the county courthouse museum in Muskogee, Oklahoma.
How strange! You find things in the most unusual places. I think Forrest had something like 10 or 20 horses shot out from under him.
A lot ... and he got quite a few wounds. He died in 1877, only in his early 50s.
Quite a life. Those men packed a lot of living into their short years. Lee was only in his early 60s, I believe.
63, died from congestive heart failure. Two of my children were born on his birthday.
