In the wake of the Charleston shooting, Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) are considering ways to renew their failed push to pass meaningful gun control legislation.
In separate interviews Tuesday night at a reception before a ceremony hosted by Sandy Hook families to honor Toomey, they discussed their desire to find a new way forward.
We want to make sure we have the votes. Pats going to have to, and Ill work with him, to get some of our colleagues on the Republican side, Manchin said, adding he hasnt talked directly to Toomey about a revival.
Manchin specifically mentioned an effort aimed at keeping guns out of the hands of people diagnosed with mental illness.
Though the effort is in the early stages, Toomey also said hes looking for opportunities to reintroduce something related to combating gun violence.
What Im trying to figure out is there something that could get the support of the 60 votes that we would need in the Senate, Toomey said. Joe Manchin was and is a great partner and someone I will continue to work with and Im open to exploring what is possible.

What do you expect with their constituency governed by emotion, sloth and stupidity?
You can’t help yourself. You are wrong all the time on every topic. I know you love Toomey and excited about this new bill, but you are WRONG.
Zero can get a lot more done with a GOP Congress these days.
I am not at all sure we have the votes to block gun control.
The GOP-E mentality these days is deranged.
The only hope is that enough of them recall that voting for such a thing is political suicide.
We will see.
Too bad that you can insult, but you can never show me being wrong on the facts.
How can you defend the horror of post 7, and Arlen Specter?
The pro-abortion radical?
I’m all in favor of that route, but you do realize the end game of facing arrest and a multi year, life wrecking felony for owning “previously legal XY” is going to get screamy and deathy... Or everyone will throw in the towel after a couple of those in the news and it’ll (2A) be over.
Isn’t he dead? Perhaps if you worried about today and the disaster that is Toomey who also was for gays in the military which you always supported which i thought was weird but whatever. It doesn’t surprise me that you support Toomey, but I thought with gun control you might at least care about the second amendment. I guess not.
Does Pat Toomey really want to commit political suicide?
That post made no sense at all.
You really don’t like learning anything about Santorum, yet you always want to promote him for some reason.
How do you defend what he joined with Specter to do to the GOP, as revealed in post 7, and him continuing that fight, even for the 2010 election?
After which, Santorum switched to pushing Romney, remember Romney, the man who wanted open homosexuality in the military and in Scout leaders since at least 1994?
The man who was so anti-gun?
Is that a young Sid?
What movie?
[Toomeys a louse.]
Yeah, a crab louse.
Why don’t they just pass the UN small arms treaty?
Now that TPP has passed, it should be pretty easy.
Machine can go fsck himself.
Santorum supported Romney after he left the campaign....Romney was the only one left so of course he was going to support the candidate.....obvious.
You support Toomey and was glad to see him win the Senate seat? Right? So after being so excited over it, you see he is for gays in the military and against the 2nd Amendment which makes you clearly the same.
Santorum was right to support the Senior Senator from Pennsylvania over liberal Toomey. I stand by that and there is no way you can talk me out of it.
Specter is DEAD and gone........I know you miss him but get over it.
Santorum- earned it. Specter- became a Democrat and Cornyn- was still supporting him.
Santorum- earned it
Well Toomey is turning out WORSE then Specter (except his last two years).
One step closer to civil war.
I’m almost glad at this point. I’m so sick of these one-world dicks pushing their agenda.
I wonder how they will like it when we push back...
I was wondering about that too. The dam has been broken, lets go full Marxist.
How is it worse? Especially since Specter was one of the most powerful Republicans. Toomey has no juice.
Do you ever get tired of pushing liberalism?
Santorum 1990: Im not a Reagan Republican
The Reagan line echoes Romneys own memorable remark from his 1994 Senate campaign, when he said that he didnt want to return to Reagan-Bush.
Santorum reportedly made a similar statement on a separate occasion. According to an October 28, 1990 piece in the Pittsburgh Press, the afternoon newspaper that eventually became part of the Post-Gazette, he described himself as a progressive conservative in his campaign manual
Santorum comparing Romney to Reagan in the 2008 primary, (Romney really despised Reagan and left the party because of him).
