A record 21.7 million American kids get free or reduced-price lunch during at school. But when summer vacation starts, the vast majority of them go without this essential, federally funded benefit. Fewer than 4 million kids -- or just 18% of those in the school lunch program -- are fed through the U.S. Department of Agriculture's summer food program. While that's a record number for the 40-year-old initiative, many advocates and government officials say more needs to be done. "In the summer, when those school meals disappear, children find themselves hungry and with few options," said Duke Storen, a senior director at Share Our Strength, which aims to end child hunger. "It impacts their health and well-being and contributes to learning loss."

They are serving anyone under 18 BREAKFAST, LUNCH, a SNACK and DINNER. So please tell me what responsibilities their miserable sperm and egg donors still have? What are they doing with the EBT card, WIC, etc. that they get, supposedly to feed their spawn?
Just tonight I saw signs all over the NYC subway advertising FREE FOOD for anyone under 18 years of age, at schools, libraries, and other municipal places like that.
It’s happening all across the country. It seems to be the latest fad...even here in TX! Free food &/or extremely reduced food for ALL...compliments of the working stiffs (you and I).
One Texas school district employee was quoted as saying...feeding people is what we do best. Yikes.
Since most kids are now overweight, what’s the problem?
Because, "...the vast majority of them go without this essential, federally funded benefit."
If people start doing the responsible thing, them "essential federally funded benefits" won't be so essential and that is not an option to them that rules.
This country would never tolerate white parents neglecting their children the way our darker permanent underclass does; the government views the worst place for those children as being with the gibsmedats who hatched them for cash (and for once the government is right). There is no nurturing, educating, providing - just “GIBSMEDAT” with the freebies...
No amount of affirmative action reparations is going to fix people who all too often “max out” at a third grade education. Last night on the news I watched a robbery victim in Newark gibbering about how she was robbed of cash and an Iphone 6+ - she obviously overcame the “digital divide”, but could barely speak.
“Why do we allow these kids to stay with parents that neglect them?”
Because there is nowhere to house them until they are 18; then they go to get clothed, housed and fed on Rikers Island.
Blacks have successfully arranged a deal whereby they have been given status as “wards of the state” (akin to American Indians); they will never be expected to produce anything but offspring, and their every material need will be satisfied. Hispanics and whites have watched and learned; many of them are now breeding for cash as well.
Guarantee a vast majority of these starving kids are over weight.
It is typically younger kids that range from the age of 5 to about 12. I live in a small town in the midwest that could be in a Norman Rockwell portrait. Last year the school quietly began to offer to fill backpacks with granola bars, apples, string cheese, and other pretty healthful foods for the kids on Fridays to tide them over till Monday morning. It isn’t a huge expense and you can tell that many of these kids need this type of assistance. I imagine many of the kids do not tell their parents so they can keep the food. Probably 50 or so kids use this offer.
Are the kids really starving? If so, I want to see pictures of emaciated kids. If not, then taking my money at the point of a gun for their support is armed robbery. I guess that makes me a meany, but too bad.
We have a program like that in my suburban community too.
No government monies involved, it all works on donations and is tied (loosely) to a local church’s food pantry.
From what I have learned is that the backpack program is kind of the first step in aid for families SUDDENLY experiencing financial troubles—which is happening more and more in the “middle class” suburbs (one parents loses a job, or hours are cut back and suddenly those who were getting by paycheck to paycheck are having trouble with the basics.)
I would guess your program is probably volunteer based as well.
