As recently as eight months ago, at a gubernatorial debate, Haley answered her Democratic opponents call to take down the flag by countering that none of the CEOs whove brought their businesses to the state seemed to have any issue with it. That may be about to be change, though protests to burn the flag on Saturday are already picking up steam on Facebook so evidently Haleys position will change with it. Last year 61 percent of South Carolinians supported keeping the flag in place on the state house grounds, but Haleys term-limited as governor and is probably thinking more of her national potential at this point. Shes on the 2016 VP short list already; todays announcement will remove a potential obstacle. Its also a huge favor not just to Republicans in the state legislature, wholl be grateful to have her acting as lightning rod on this, but to the GOPs presidential field, which wants to make the Confederate flag issue go away ASAP. Theres a lot more upside than downside for her in taking this position.

Add another Republican to the list of “Easily led by Commie Propaganda”.
Is it any wonder why the GOP is dead?
“When does the Fag Flag get taken down? Talk about Nazis....”
I didn’t know SC flew the rainbow flag at state buildings.
People have been making noise about the flag and calling for boycotts against South Carolina for well over a decade. Now she wants to placate businesses which haven't had a problem with it to date?
But a Confederate flag? Yes, I just might."
Nailed it.
Strom started moving leftward in the 1990s, but people didn’t know it. I wonder if they will remove that nice statue of Strom on the capitol grounds since he was once a segregationist.
I never saw what the SC people see in either Haley or Graham.
Well we plan to be proudly displaying our stars and bars alongside the Gadsden at our July4th deck party. Anybody that doesn’t like it can kiss our grits. :-)
“People have been making noise about the flag and calling for boycotts against South Carolina for well over a decade. Now she wants to placate businesses which haven’t had a problem with it to date? “
I think there will businesses who haven’t had a problem with it to date who will have a problem with it now.
The negative PR for supporting something that is largely seen as a symbol of slavery will be a too much of a distraction.
Probably the business leaders don’t have an opinion about the flag either way the same way they probably don’t have an opinion on gay marriage. They care about business and now the flag issue has become bad for business.
They talk a good game when they need to.
That negative PR existed when they decided not to remove the flag. It hasn't translated into any economic hardships. I don't think it will going forward.
You are correct - I’d say it’s because of her weak character and the fact that her decisions are all based on political calculus. The woman is nothing if not ambitious and you know she wants to see herself as having a more national profile. I’d be happy if the rag that represents nothing more than a traitorous failed state was never seen again.
Next they will demand all Confederate Monuments be removed and replaced by monuments to “Black Heroes”. Then they will demand the flags be removed from Museums and History books—ban all Re-inactors from flying them—Ban Re-inactments of the Civil War. It will come to this—One symbol down—now focus on another.
“That negative PR existed when they decided not to remove the flag. It hasn’t translated into any economic hardships. I don’t think it will going forward. “
The negative PR got impossible to ignore when a guy who is an admitted white supremacist claiming he wants to start a civil war killed 9 black people at a historical black church while they were having a prayer meeting.
Pulling the flag down from state buildings is really the only action that can be taken.
Governor Haley can’t make people not be racists and she can’t make people not hate each other. She can make the state buildings look neutral.
Bingo. Fueling more resentment is exactly what it will accomplish. The South lost the war. Can’t the Left just be satisfied with that? Of course not. Attempts by Southerners to honor the bravery of their Confederate ancestors is attacked with rants about “racism”, “bigotry” and other hogwash in the liberal arsenal of propaganda tricks. We’re not forcing anyone to fly the Confederate flag. Put a lid on it,libs.
I believe that when they refused to take it down the first time over 60% of the population wanted to keep it up. Now the governor wants to alientate that large a percentage of her population to placate outsiders?
Governor Haley cant make people not be racists and she cant make people not hate each other. She can make the state buildings look neutral.
So does she remove all the Confederate memorials on state property as well? All in interest of making them neutral?
Taking down the flag will NOT heal old wounds. This nation has gone to extraordinary measures to “heal old wounds,”. This country has been tied in knots throwing resource after resource to appease the 13% black population. Most of the disintegrating cities are run by blacks leaders, which affects the entire nation. The blacks DO NOT WANT wounds to heal, they want to keep them open and festering. Take down the confederate flag, it won’t matter, the country will still be mired in hatred. As Michelle Obama whispered so eloquently to her husband, “all this for a damn flag”.
Hasn’t something akin to that already happened in California or Colorado where kids were banned from flying the flag on cinco de mayo?
It’s a States Rights issue. If the people, through their representatives elect to do so, then so be it.
I don’t think Michelle Obama ever said that but let’s not let a good urban legend die.

And I love and respect Gov. Haley and Sen. Tim Scott and they believe taking down the flag is the right thing to do. I agree. The people of SC showed the nation how we can come together. I am proud to live in this state.
“So does she remove all the Confederate memorials on state property as well? All in interest of making them neutral?”
Nah. Nobody’s waving those in videos or making them the symbol of anything.
Be hard to remove everything associated with the CSA.
But the flag? That’s easy and yeah it is placating outsiders but they’re the outsiders bringing jobs and money to the state. The flag is seen as a symbol of white racists. Whether that’s fair or not doesn’t matter it’s already perceived that way. I bet they pull it down and it’ll probably sty down this time.
This issue just got way too hot to touch.
