As recently as eight months ago, at a gubernatorial debate, Haley answered her Democratic opponents call to take down the flag by countering that none of the CEOs whove brought their businesses to the state seemed to have any issue with it. That may be about to be change, though protests to burn the flag on Saturday are already picking up steam on Facebook so evidently Haleys position will change with it. Last year 61 percent of South Carolinians supported keeping the flag in place on the state house grounds, but Haleys term-limited as governor and is probably thinking more of her national potential at this point. Shes on the 2016 VP short list already; todays announcement will remove a potential obstacle. Its also a huge favor not just to Republicans in the state legislature, wholl be grateful to have her acting as lightning rod on this, but to the GOPs presidential field, which wants to make the Confederate flag issue go away ASAP. Theres a lot more upside than downside for her in taking this position.

Correction: Meant Does.
Really Nikki?
Please.....
I’m from NY and respect that flag as the standard of a proud group of American warriors who fought the good fight for their homeland. It has nothing to do with hate. The haters are the ones who want it removed
Im still waiting for someone to edit the Trayvon Martin article Wikipedia to add that Dylann Roof was radicalized by the George Zimmerman trial.
I think it would help republicans in that it would give the MSM one less thing to point to as republicans supporting racism. Really, what good does it do to continue to fly this flag? It has obviously been hijacked by people who are not wanting to see the races work together. I live in SC and am fine with it being taken down if it helps heal old wounds.
My general rule of thumb is "Never give trouble makers what they want."
No. The agitators do not need a reward.
Hey, if that’s what SC wants to do, then fine.
But if you think this is going to heal anything, you are going to be in for a real shock. You fell for their BS and now they have the formula to start pushing for all manner of stuff to be removed from view, and they will use the same reasoning, maybe even fake a few incidents to move it along.
It won't heal any old wounds. It will simply encourage the left to demand further concessions. You will get nothing in return for doing as they ask. If anything, you will simply convince them that they need to demand more.
This won't help heal anything. If anything it will fuel even more resentment.
The emotional response of a female is in full display here. Step back, Nikki. Take a deep breath.
...thoughtless to be sure, but the good old knee-jerk reaction still works. Reckon the cross-generational-racial-political civility displayed to-date was too good to last.
They should get rid of the flag in Maryland and Illinois because those two states have the highest murder rate, obviously its the fault of the flag
If anything it will make those that do fly it even more defiant now that they have the proof that they were looking for that their paranoia was justified, and that outsiders are still trying to “keep them down”.
+1
Thank you for your rather rare words of reason. The flag is the battle emblem of an army that engaged in treason against the United States. It is deeply offensive to a large segment of the population of our country for very understandable reasons. South Carolina only started flying it during the 1960’s as a symbol of defiance to the civil rights movement and desegregation. There is no good reason for it’s being flown over public property.
Bring it down.
Yep. It’s a slippery slope. Won’t be long before the American flag is ordered taken down because ‘it represents white privilege and traditional marriage’. THEY’RE ALREADY GOING TO CHANGE OUR $10 BILL.. WHAT DID HAMILTON DO TO DESERVE THAT?
So every time a single drugged out 21 year old commits some heinous crime we’ll have some national changes to law and culture that effects everyone else?
I see no reason to keep it flying other than to be stubborn. I am old enough to know to pick my battles. An old flag isn’t one of them.
I certainly don’t expect everyone to agree with me. I am simply offering my point of view.
Don’t forget to plow all the Civil War cemeteries under while you’re at it....
Do you work for the SPLC by any chance?
She is placating people who would never vote for her and pissing off people who would. If the flag comes down her career in elective office is over.
