Or they're scared to death of losing voters to more strident opponents ...
Which I think is the case with Hillary. She's trying to move far enough Left to head off O'Malley, Malloy and even the impact Sanders seems to be having on the Democrat primary electorate. She's scared to death of another Barack Obama coming out of nowhere and outflanking her coronation.
And then trusting that with a sympathetic press she can reposition herself to the political "center" enough after winning the nomination.
