Neil Young: Donald Trump 'not authorized' to rock in the free world
LA Times ^ | 06/16/2015 | Randy Lewis

Billionaire Donald Trump, a Republican, announced his bid for the presidency with Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World” blasting in the background, and once again a political candidate has associated himself with a rock star without the endorsement of said star.

“Donald Trump was not authorized to use ‘Rockin' in the Free World’ in his presidential candidacy announcement,” Young, 69, told the Los Angeles Times on Tuesday through his longtime manager, Elliot Roberts. “Neil Young, a Canadian citizen, is a supporter of Bernie Sanders for president of the United States of America,” referring to the U.S. senator from Vermont who is vying for the Democratic nomination in 2016.

I hope Neil Young will remember — us southern men don’t need him around anyhow.

No but he made the movie Human Highway to attack nuclear power and beats the green energy drum circle all the time.

Iran going nuclear isn’t something that irks Neil Young, but a candidate playing one of his songs at a campaign rally does.

On the scale of injustices in the world, he definitely focuses on first world problems and is inconsistent on energy policy.

is about the mistreatment of returned Viet Nam veterans.

His song is a piece of crap. The vietnam vets I know got mistreated ONLY by the lefty protestors and no one else.

Seems like just yesterday that John Lennon wrote “Come Together” for Timothy Leary’s presidential campaign.

I am not 100% sure that he can. It depends on what rights Young and the label maintain and you is managing the copyright. While it is likely ASCAP it isn’t always.

It’s just a complicated issue BUT you can’t just use it without someone paying rights to someone. that’s just basic copyright law. Typically, venues will hold a blanket ASCAP license so they can play anything where ASCAP holds the copyright. I just have no idea if that was the case here.

I just find it a fascinating legal exercise (sorry, just the lawyer in me). But I do know that no one can just use someone else’s song without permission in some form.

I like much of Neil’s music, but evidently he never was interested in “rocking in a free world.” He has become and environmentalist nut case, and a moronic socialist. Funny how so many of those old “sex, drugs, and rock’n roll” types have morphed into a bunch of anti-freedom fascists. When I heard the song today at Trump’s announcement I figured Neil would complain.

I trust that the Trump Campaign paid the appropriate ASCAP fees for the public performance. I would think that they did because Trump is an astute businessman and would likely have staffers that would obtain the proper licensing rights.

If so, then Neil Young can go pound sand. If he's so sensitive about how his music is licensed, then he can remove his catalog from ASCAP and license it out himself.

Neil Young is the only entertainment type whose leftist values I have been able to overlook. Most of his work is not political. My favorite is “Cowgirl in the Sand.” His long grungy ballads are the best. “Ramada Inn” is a newer good one he has done with Crazy Horse.

Hey Trump!

How much would you pay for Neil Young?

A photographer apparently cannot turn down clients. just ask those who are forced to photograph same sex weddings.

This doesn’t even require physical presence from Mr. Young. It requires no action on his part yet he can choose to protect his “art” in ways that other artists are legally prohibited (even when it requires them to be part of something they reject).

And it isn’t new. In the 1980s, PIXAR (pre-Disney) refused to lease their short films out for projection in some states based on something like politicians’ stance on anti-abortion legislation.

Not even tied to the exhibitors own beliefs or politics.
