A quick guide to the what’s happening in the trade alphabet soup [Updated] (TPA,TPP,TAA)

The abbreviations are flying fast and furious, and it can be hard to keep up. Here’s a guide to where we’re at.

The House just had two key votes. First, there was a vote on Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA), a big old subsidy program for unions. Unions love it, but Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) 18% pulled support for it as a ploy.

So after TAA (union subsidy) failed, the House voted on Trade Promotion Authority (TPA, more commonly known as Fast Track). Without TAA (union subsidy) included, most Republicans were on board, and most Democrats were opposed. Since Republican have the majority, TPA (Fast Track) succeeded.

However, TPA (Fast Track) must also be passed by the Senate in order to take effect. It seems likely that Senate Democrats will oppose TPA (Fast Track) because the TAA (union subsidy) package was not included. Without enough Democrat votes, TPA (Fast Track) will not be able to get an up or down vote.

Without TPA (Fast Track), the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP, Trade Deal) negotiations will be stalled, because other countries understand the US political system enough to know that US Senators are an ornery bunch. Other countries don’t want to make a final commitment unless they know that commitment will get an up or down vote in the Senate, and that won’t happen without TPA (fast track).

So in the end, the Democrats are abandoning giving the President TPA (fast track), denying him a signature win in the form of concluding TPP (trade deal), all because it’s more important to them to get TAA (union subsidy).

Clear as mud, right?

Updated: It’s been pointed out to me that it is possible that TAA (union subsidy) will get added to TPA (fast track) in a conference committee bill. If Rep. John Boehner (R-OH) N/A% and Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) 67% let that happen, then that’ll snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Union kickbacks to sign off on it, of course.

Way to go Cruz.

I wonder if the powers that be (that will soon be leaving, I hope) have purposely made this over complicated in hopes of confusing folks.

Thank goodness for Wikileaks. Here's a link to the Wiki articles.

Actually that made sense.

So the only thing saving this nation at the moment from the terms of a globalist bill we are not allowed to read is the fact that democrats want a better deal for unions.

Joy.

Yep. The GOP knew they could sneak the TPA through after the TAA failed, and have the media report that ObamaTrade failed. I’m sure it was a set-up. Pelosi was part of it; so was Obama. If nothing else, the GOP is brilliant at being deceptive with its own people.

Cruz sure likes standing proudly as a symbol of the Transnational Progressive Red Army that is unrelentingly assaulting the beachhead of Liberty in America.

Any time this many slight variations basically describing the same thing, is a dead give-away that something is trying to be hidden.

I really see that now. Should have seen it earlier. TAA, TPP, TPA. It was a shell game, shifting stories and aspects throughout this entire debate. Thanks for the comment, X-spurt.
The Boehner/Obama/Pelosi/McConnel Axis of Powers will strike Pearl Harbor next. These people are smart and they are sinister.

Right....I guess you’d have rather him stand with the Unions then?

Oh wait...his voting record makes him a Progressive...boy, you are sooo smart.

He's a progressive for supporting ObamaTrade, which was written by transnational corporations.

C'mon, TNMOUTH, I know you know that I am right.

What is clear is that the GOP is giving Obama power and that should be enough to be against any Bill.

His blind idolatry of Cruz prevents him from seeing the obvious.

TPA supports and makes TPP easy to shove down our throat.

Obama wants TPA badly and so does Cruz.

All facts you cannot deny. Cruz is working with Obama.

All facts. All true. And all public record.

Playing word games back and forth about TPA, TPP, and TAA just means the Cruz operatives have nothing else. We all know Cruz’s TPA makes TPP far easier to bury us with and Cruz is unfortunately fine with that.

I don’t remotely recognize this GOP. As far back as I can remember, I’ve never seen them treacherous with their own base....not even in the Reagan/GHWBush wars.

Fast Track is not needed.

They are sinister.

There are some who honestly see the Trade thing as beneficial to America. I don’t know one way or the other, simply because it has been so hush hush and now the multitude of acronyms to further muddy the water.

There have been Fast Track Trade things before, do not remember one where Congress had to go into a secure bunker to read and then sign a secrecy agreement to keep the legislation secret.

Legislation and Treaties are not supposed be “we have to pass it to know what’s in it”. That is what gave us nobamacare.

My best bet, Ted Cruz, is supporting the Fast Track part (up or down vote on a Trade Treaty), I believe primarily because it will apply to the next POTUS. That is all well and good, but the secrecy thing dirties it way too much for me.
