But it isn't a crime. As far as the Census Bureau is concerned, you are whatever race you say you are. There's no governing body that verifies race and nothing to stop anyone, short of public shame, from marking "black" on college scholarship or employment applications.
I'm not even certain such a verification test exists, scientifically speaking. Sure, there are DNA markers than can trace family history to certain regions of the world. How many of us white people could go back, say a thousand years, a find a drop of Moor blood in our DNA? Could we then claim African-ness?
What if animals could do this?

I know when we had our malamute tested (because we didn’t have papers) she was pure malamute as far back as they could test (about 7 generations).
