Sensing his free trade agenda was hours from a stunning defeat, President Barack Obama visited Capitol Hill in person on Friday morning to make a personal plea for his own party's support.
Democrats ignored him.
And now, the prospects for the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the biggest free trade deal in history, to be finalized and adopted are grim, unless Republicans can find a way within days to revive the bills and rescue Obama's biggest second-term legislative priority.
The House overwhelmingly rejected the first in a series of trade bills Friday, with Democrats voting against a program that aids displaced workers in large part because, under the chamber's procedures, its defeat meant the vote on the so-called "fast track" bill that followed was only symbolic, so the measure couldn't be sent to Obama's desk.
The vote provided the clearest evidence yet that, with 19 months left in his presidency, Obama's pulpit is less bully than it's ever been before.
It also showcased the strength of populist elements of both parties, who beat back an intense lobbying push from traditional Washington forces like the Chamber of Commerce and the National Association of Manufacturers.
Friday's vote doesn't mean the package of trade bills are dead. House Republican leaders have called for re-votes by Tuesday, buying Obama a little more time to lobby his own party, and GOP leaders time to twist arms.

I know he is. Seen him in action.
The problem is the House Rules that give dictatorial power to a very few of the 435 people who are supposed to be equals. And the Senate Rules are even more arcane.
Who are they and why can’t we get them out?????
Obamatrade would empower foreign companies to use foreign tribunals to enforce special privileges only available to them. Obamatrade would exempt foreign companies from EPA and other onerous regulations that American firms would still be forced to comply with. Under Obamatrade, foreign companies could actually go to an international tribunal and sue American taxpayers for cash awards to compensate them for costs associated with government regulations something American-owned companies would not be able to do.
A White House news conference on April 28 with President Obama and Japanese Prime Minster Shinzo Abe confirms the TransPacific Partnership will impact our immigration laws. PM Abe described the TPP as a new economic sphere in which people goods and money will flow freely.
“unless Republicans can find a way within days to revive the bills and rescue Obama’s biggest second-term legislative priority.”
Good grief what a bunch of retards.
Nicely done

Well, for starters, we could ask the voters from his district to kiss Boner goodbye. Then there’s our homegrown POS, Kevin McCarthy from sunny SoCal, etc, etc, etc. In truth, the problem is the one that we citizens create by re-electing these a$$holes every two years ad infinitum. Everyone hates the Congress, but their own Congressman is a star!
Today there are no term limits for the Congress, and you can bet that the Congress would never vote them into place because it would ruin their “life’s work of service to the rest of us” (and also stop their gravy train of money and benefits).
Obama lobbying will cost them more votes.
I see what your saying “Hatch in Utah” is one of them....
I wished I would have known this like 20 years ago, I would be rich by now, not have to work, got people to do it for me, get to ride around in limos and have good food to eat....wow....what a life....but you know what...
I would rather live the way I do, helping as many people as I can, being there for my family, believing in God...its a better life...
It’s dead, Jim.
Democrats, already in a sad situation are finding the with unions being crushed by the states they cannot afford to abandon them. Yet they approve of illegals taking American jobs.
Without the rats, this won’t go through.
Re-vote on Tuesday, the political bribery begins.
Wow. The GOPe really is pushing hard to lose us, isn’t it? If there were any Blue Dog Democrats anymore, the GOPe would be seeing people like me bolting.
Traitor?
You are far too kind in regards this piece of horse crap known as boehner.
Wow! Democrats doing something the Republicans should have been doing.
Look for a re vote next week on TAA. Boehner will be twisting arms and handing out favors as bribes to get republicrats to change their votes.
