The only way freedom of speech as a first amendment right can be defended is for the harmed party, the fired principle to take this to court. And sue that superintendent and whatever school board officials personally for damages. Not by going after the school the county or state.

After a few examples of ruined financial and professional careers for violating the first amendment we'll probably see less of this sort of nonsense.

Unfortunately these a$$holes are covered in their “employment contracts” by district-paid errors and omissions insurance most likely, so the district (or it’s insurance carrier) will shoulder the costs of the prosecution. Still, if enough of this stuff goes to court, insurance carriers would start raising premiums or deny coverage so the lawsuits will have a positive effect.
