Your painting a broad stroke here as to the suicide rate among gays.
I just looked this up and while you are correct in assuming the suicide rate for gays is higher, the real interesting face is that it is very high for gay teens.
Not sure what the rate is for adult gays, the study did not say. In any event is it totally logical to make an assumption that this guy was trying to commit suicide?
I am waiting for more info before going with that scenario.

I have been studying this issue for a very long time. The high suicide rate has been known since at least the 1990s.

All other reasonable conjecture would appear to be eliminated. Let us assume, for example, that the train had an electronic malfunction that caused it's speed to increase. The Engineer had ample time to shut down the Engine, or apply the brakes. He did not shut down the engine, and he only applied the brakes sporadically towards the very end, as if he was having second thoughts.
The most logical conclusion is that it was the Engineer himself who revved the speed up to double for what that curve was rated. Why would someone do such a thing?
I can only think of one likely explanation. I bet if investigators were looking in that direction, they would probably find out he had a fight with his "boyfriend" or perhaps wasn't getting any attention that he wanted.
A fight with his "Trans-Gender" "boyfriend" is why Bradly Manning turned traitor and gave away all those secrets and got all those people killed.
