TOPEKA, Kan. - The Kansas Senate passed Sunday what would be the largest tax increase in the history of the state of Kansas.
The measure passed by a 21-17 margin. Kansas Sen. Julia Lynn, who represents Johnson County, Kan., was the deciding vote on the bill.
Details on the $471 million tax increase:
The sales tax increases to 6.55 percent from 6.15 percent. The cigarette tax will go up by 50 cents each pack, bringing the total tax to $1.29. The food tax will drop on July 1, 2016. However, it will be 6.55 percent until that time. Most itemized deductions on state income taxes are repealed. Reduced deductions for property taxes, charitable contributions and mortgage interest. There's a property tax lid for cities and counties. A new school voucher program that will provide tax credits to those who donate funds for private and religious schools. $24 million on taxes for business owners. The Kansas House will vote on the bill Monday.
Thank you republicans.
So much for making government live within it means...
How does the size of the tax increase compare to the previous tax cut?
One by one, more and more americans are understanding the #uniparty.
I have a friend, liberal-progressive in politics, who has been complaining about the Republican govenor making budget cuts while she pays 28% income tax and Mitt Romney only pays 14% (She apparently doesn’t, even with her PhD, understand the difference between income tax and tax on investment income).
Kansas House hasn’t approved it yet. They may not.
Considerably smaller. But the tax cuts enacted already have not resulted in the job growth or revenue growth that were projected when the plan was enacted.
Pay up, Peasants!
Kansas will not collect 471 million on their 471 million tax increase. Kansas will lose a chunk of its tax base so that taxes will fall after a first year peak when the new law is in effect.
It is not the Uniparty. The uniparty actually implies factions. It is the Republican Party, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Democrat Party. Boehner and NcConnell are Democrat managers of the Republican subsidiary. The NSA database and other databases ensure that it can be no other way.
Now there's a story that the governor is threatening to defund the Kansas Supreme Court is they go ahead and rule that the state has to raise taxes to give more $$ to poorer school districts..
Brownback's telling the liberal judges to go and pound sand..
Well, good luck,Kansas. Don’t celebrate just yet. This (expected) money is for what exactly?? Sales tax is already higher than that in at least one of the neighboring states,so maybe that was their main reason for doing it. Smooth move,Dummies!
Congress is not empowered to tax for those purposes which are within the exclusive province of the States. Justice John Marshall, Gibbons v. Ogden, 1824.
But hey, we can trust them to do the right thing with Article V, right?
Gee, I’ll bet the commie newspaper editors will love Gov. Brownback now. (S)
You won’t get the truth about the Kansas economy from the KS media. They are all RAT controlled, and too many idiots believe their lies and parrot them back.
The big “accomplishment” of the GOP “leadership” here in Iowa during this legislative session was also raising our taxes.
A 45% increase in the gas tax.
With Republicans like these, who needs Democrats?
Even if it is dollar for dollar I don’t see how this is an improvement. I don’t know the details on the lost deductions but it sounds like things you can deduct on your federal return you can’t also deduct on your state return. ? The sales tax increase is horrible.
I would have rather they just undo the cuts than this. I will pay much more in taxes under this plan than I would have before the tax cuts.
They should just go back to the way things were and start over. At this point I would rather have higher INCOME tax rates than all this monkeying around with everything else. At least it is based on real income.
