They were picked up by radar in the early hours of this morning and were then given life jackets by Royal Marine Commandos before being transported from the landing craft on to the 19,000 tonne ship.
There were shocking scenes of barefoot men and exhausted pregnant women piling onto the ship before they were huddled together while they waited to have security checks.
Most of them had nothing with them except a plastic carrier bag and mobile phones.
They were given water and some bread while they waited for the news of when they were going to dock in Italy.
Asam, 17, from Ghana, said: 'I decided to leave my country because it was bad.
'I worked in Libya to pay for the journey and I want to live in Italy and work.'

God help poor Italy.
Agree, but the authorities won't do it, and much more drastic actions will be called for later because they won't. If they don't stop this, the invaders will be meting out lethal Islamic justice to the infidels all over Europe.
But, but.. I thought when 0dumbo bombed Libya (without Congress consent) and Hillary gloated about killing Ghadaffi everything would be ‘comin’ up roses’ in Libya?
A lot more lives would be saved and Europe given a tiny it of relief it the Italian Navy would sink these Berber troop transports before they get more than a few miles from the coast. One or two such actions and the boats will stop coming and will stop sinking due to overloading, scuttling, bad storms, etc. They will just stop coming. Many more of these would-be invaders would live because they do not set out at all if they know the end of the journey is at the bottom of the Mediterranean and certain. We wasted Hiroshima and Nagasaki on that thought.
Italy is their gateway to the greater EU. Very few stay in Italy. They are headed to the wealthy nations with good social welfare systems and w more jobs, legitimate jobs and off the books jobs and crime/scams opportunities.
They are headed to England, France, Germany. Holland and Belgium.
Italy’s misplaced sense of compassion will be it’s undoing.
Don’t visit the neighborhoods where these people are moving to. The motto should be on billboards surrounding them. “We love Africa so much we are bringing it to a neighborhood near you. Now where’s my handouts?”
I don’t know why Italian citizens aren’t marching in Rome and standing guard at their ports. And why aren’t European authorities arresting the captains of these boats and blowing them out of the water once they ‘rescue’ everyone on board? Are they just letting them turn back around to go pick up another load?
Send em all to the UK. That would make the Europeans happy.
................
Italy will process them and then the UN will send them to the USA.
Call me merciless. But leave them. We have no way to screen the savages out. Their doctrine dictates they spread like this. Don’t encourage it.
I think that was just for us, U.S., as Paul Harvey once said.
I don’t have a mobile phone
