So would we as a nation today, right now, be better off with no carriers in our fleet? Answer Yes or No.
No, absolutely not. Those carriers are very handy when it comes to expeditionary warfare against enemy states that don’t have decent navies, which covers most countries. Against a country like China or Russia, their strategic value is neutralised by their extreme vulnerability to submarines. However, the number of carriers at the expense of other things, particularly attack subs, is a matter for debate.
