Theres been a lot of discussion about same sex marriage over the last few months particularly from the candidates running for the GOP nomination. Sometimes it seems as if they are in a contest to see who can be the most stalwart defender of traditional marriage who can most effectively stoke the unfounded fears of the far right.
When talking about same sex marriage, these candidates regularly throw around phrases like religious freedom and religious liberty, warn that marriage equality will lead to the criminalization of Christianity or the downfall of the American family, and fret that our nations very future is at risk.
Lets be clear. The fight over marriage equality isnt about religious freedom or the criminalization of Christianity. States have regularly taken action to enact civil marriage with clear exemptions and protections for churches, synagogues and other religious entities. No matter what happens with same-sex marriage, that will not change.
It is also no longer a fight about our countrys future because that fight is already over. According to a recent CNN/ORC survey, the highest percentage of Americans ever, 63%, support the freedom to marry as a constitutional right for gay couples. This is an increase of 14% since 2010 and shows significant gains across all party lines. Regardless of what the U.S. Supreme Court decides this term, the American Public is already on the side of marriage equality. Should the Court oppose the expansion of the freedom to marry to all fifty states, millions of Americans will be disappointed, but progress will continue to be made. It will just take a bit longer.
What is up for discussion and debate however, is where the Republican Party goes from here

Fox News seems to be pushing this agenda.
We need a true Conservative party and voice. Not New York’s watered down version of conservative.
It’s time for everyone to embrace SIN??????????
how about ‘gender equality’....
how about ‘intellectual equality’....
how about ‘mental equality’....
how about ‘dysfunctional equality’....
how about ‘leave us alone’ equality!
There’s no stopping it, but embrace it, NO.
Another liar for the left.
Mary, the Republican Party is dead, your kind purposely killed it long ago.
Just come out of the other closet and admit you are a Democrat.
Okay, so they've had "civil unions" for some time now. But still they insist on "Marriage". I think that this is all about their own self doubt. They know it's wrong and they want us to jump through hoops to try and make them feel better about their insecurity. The problem is in their heads and nothing we can do is going to make it better.
Marriage has a meaning which necessarily involves two people of the opposite sex.
Deciding to call a cow’s tail a leg does NOT result in a 5 legged cow!
Time for the GOP to embrace God and forget about appeasing the godless heathen.
Two men cannot be husband and wife, nor can two women be husband and wife. Therefore, there can be no such thing as “gay marriage”, no matter what the Court rules, nor more so than if they ruled it was constitutionally mandated that minotaurs exist in a binding ruling - that does not make it so. And code words and phrases like “marriage equality” don’t cut it - there is only “marriage reality.”
It’s time for Mary Cheney to embrace the concepts of language and reality.
That claim has already been proven false, with the persecution of Christian bakers in the courts.
Its time for the left to stop the selfish, destructive and oppressive agenda forced on the American people.
Sure Mary, lets ignore the deeply held beliefs of most Americans and centuries of civilization to accommodate you and your 1%.
Ah....my path to riches!
I will begin marketing 4 legged chickens.
I’ve declared that the appendages formerly called “wings” are now “legs”.
Clueless nonsense - has she not been following what has been happening up in Canada and in some of our states, like Oregon? That's what the "marriage equality" and "gay rights" movements are all about - it has nothing to do with expanding rights for some but about specifically targeting people and forcing them underground under the guise of "rights" - just like many programs that are designed to "help the poor" is just a rouse to merely expand the government's powers and authority over the populace at large.
Sadly, I have no doubts that they are about to.
WHY DON’T WE HAVE A NEW POLITICAL PARTY YET?
Sodomy is Marriage.
War is Peace.
Freedom is Slavery.
Ignorance is Strength.
First of all, I don’t think she is trying to fool anyone. The piece is so full of various boilerplare Progressive terminology, catch phrases, talking points, etc that at best she cobbled it together from other peoples’ work and at worst it was written for her.
As it is, whoever wrote this employed the Progressive tactic of claiming it won’t impact religious freedom by defining that freedom within the specific and limited context of religious organizations. IOW not applicable outside of them, not applicable to Christians who want to live their faith as part of their daily lives, in the context of how they do business, etc.
Ms Cheney needs to work with state and federal lawmakers to propose a gay marriage rights amendement to the Constitution to the states. And if the states choose to ratify Ms Cheneys amendment then gay marriage will be constitutionally protected and Ms Cheney will be a hero.
Its time for gays to embrace the 1st amendment.
Mary Cheney must think we don’t remember gays suing Christian owned buisnesses for not celebrating gay marriages.
And history and truth go down the memory hole.
