Why Unions Exempt Themselves from Hard-Fought Minimum Wage Hikes

---snip--- Although the union-funded Raise the Wage campaigned so vociferously in favor of a $15.25 minimum wage, unions are seeking exemptions from the higher wages for their members. The exemption, or escape clause, would allow them greater strength in organizing workplaces. Unions can tell fast food chains, hotels, and hospitals that if they agree to union representation, their wage bill will be substantially lower. That will persuade employers to allow the unions to move in.

There is actually considerable precedent for what unions are seeking respecting minimum wage waivers. A number of states mandate minimum work standards dealing with required meal periods, breaks, uniform allowances, etc. (including California, whose wage orders are among the nation’s strictest). Many of these laws or regulations (again, including California’s) incorporate language like “except as provided by a collective bargaining agreement” after spelling out the mandatory benefit. Nothing out of the ordinary here; just the usual union “do as we say, not as we do” hypocrisy..

It allows other union members higher up on the pay scale to get an unnegotiated raise. Also, cost of living raises if the minimum wage is indexed to inflation, as it is in WA State.

Sounds like unions are a lot like Conrgess. Exempting themselves from rules others have to abide by.

Don’t employees have to vote to unionize? Why would they if it means lower wages?

Once it’s unionized yes. But to unionize a non-union shop the current employees have vote to be represented by a specific union. In fact I worked at one company where the employees voted to dump the SEIU and go with the Teamsters.

So they can buy votes with other peoples money.
Why do you think 109,000,000 people are getting food stamps?
Why is BO fast tracking citizenship for illegals?

I am not sure how the vote works. I guess it depends if they are in a right to work state. The employees, aka the working man, are the ones that get screwed.
From the article.
organizing becomes a win-win for employers and unions. Unions get initiation fees of about $50 per worker and a stream of dues totaling 2 percent to 4 percent of the workers’ paychecks. Employers get a lower wage bill. The losers in this scheme are employees, who have to pay union dues out of their paychecks.
