The closest that she had ever been to downtown Detroit was on the freeway going through it.
Downtown Detroit is just as safe as any other downtown area in the country. Possibly safer considering the fact that its legal to carry and defend yourself. There will be big crowds in town for the Detroit Grand Prix this weekend.
The most aggressive thing I've ever encountered in Downtown Detroit is a panhandler.

Downtown Detroit is just as safe as any other downtown area in the country. Unless its late at night and you are the police chief; then you have to be very aware of your surroundings. But seriously, I worked and grew up in a town that still has the highest crime rate in the Northwest. Yet I feel more comfortable there than I do in most other large municipalities. That is because I know where the danger is and is not and how to avoid trouble. So I understand your assessment.
My parents lived in the Detroit area when they were first married and we visited relatives many times there while I was growing up. My uncle sent them a picture of the house where I was conceived recently. It is now located in a blighted area and was for sale for $1000. Sadly, over five decades of Democratic leadership and social programs has ruined much of the area.
